The Corporate Decathlon of 2012 got off to a tremendous start at Edinburgh International Climbing Arena. Despite the fact that this year's challenge was considerably harder than last year the scores were much improved across the board. What a difference a year makes with the Climbing Arena staff commentinmg on how much improved the climers were year on year. We were off to a slow start with the Edinburgh traffic causing delays for Team Deloitte's arrival and all teams very sportingly agreed to delay the start to allow their arrival - KPMG winning a nomination from Deloitte as Good Sports Team of the year for their 'kindness'.
With the novice climbs considerably more challenging only Edinburgh Leisure and Searching For Challenges secured maximum points with all others (bar 2) reaching mid-point. Difficult climbs proved to be just that and again it was Edinburgh Leisure who performed to the highest standard securing 90 out of a maximum 120 points.
As the evening progressed so did the quality of climbing and the scores began to mount. The attitude and sporting spirit demonstrated by all teams was tremendous and this was reflected in the Good Sports Team of the Day with each team being nominated; Searching For Challenges winning it by a single vote - something to do with Ally's impressive footwear!
When all was said and done, Edinburgh Leisure came out on top but with a much smaller margin than in 2011, Team Deloitte with some real new blood in their team were the dark horses and came in as runners up ahead of Searching For Challenges by the slimmest of margins who in turn scrapped in just ahead of KPMG who deserve special mention for a remarkable performance in light of the fact that this was their first excursion to Ratho.
And let's also make special mention for, that is simply, In It For Fun. They secured 30 invaluable Decathlon points for a great effort, superbly Captained by Decathlon veteran David leading a team that included some real newcomers.
